BRIEF HISTORY
Spine and Brain Neurosurgical Center DBA openstandupMRI.com was founded in 1995 by John W. Gilbert, M.D., a 1984 graduate of the UK College of Medicine and completed his internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Gilbert comes from a long line of private practice physicians in Kentucky. His great grandfather, John W. Gilbert, M.D. graduated from the Louisville Medical College in 1874 and his grandfather, John W. Gilbert, M.D. graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School in 1904. His father, George F. Gilbert, M.D. graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1946. All were in private practice in Kentucky. Dr. Gilbert founded this Spine and Brain Neurosurgical Center in 1995 in honor of his father, George F. Gilbert, M.D., who died that same year.
Dr. Gilbert took solo call for almost three years until Dr. Greg Wheeler joined the practice in late 1997. Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Wheeler performed numerous clinics on a monthly basis, covered over a dozen clinics in Central and Eastern Kentucky to serve their patients and referring physicians.
Patients are usually seen at the request for consultation, i.e., referral from a doctor, dentist, family physician, or other physicians. Referring physicians and Spine and Brain Neurosurgical Center physicians have a mutual ethical obligation to provide the best care for the patients. Dr. Gilbert’s and Dr. Wheeler’s conservative approach to patient care and the fact that over 95% of patient referrals end up improving with nonsurgical conservative techniques has resulted in the addition of additional physicians to the practice.
Over dozen clinics were consolidated into the current five clinics with state-of-the-art T-lines electronic medical records, administrators, and a variety of other support staff and technology. The practice is the first in the world to receive 5 separate pain program accreditation awards from the American Academy of Pain Management for each of the five clinics. Also the addition of Dr. Upadhyay, Storey, Spitalieri, Kreft, Gibbs, and Mick have further assisted the practice in handling referrals and requests for multispecialty Neuroscience consultation.
The practice had established the first and only ACR (American College of Radiology), Accredited MRI imaging services in Florence, Hazard, London, and Pikeville. The practice physicians have published in national and international peer-reviewed journals, such as International Journal of Neuroscience:Spine, the American Journal of Pain Management, Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques, International Journal of Neuroscience, European Journal of Radiology, and Surgical Neurology (another international journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosciences) and Journal of Neurosurgery. The practice has recently instituted Telehealth to further enhance the delivery of multispecialty neuroscience care throughout their clinics and is the first private practice in Kentucky to become part of the Kentucky Telehealth Network. Dr. Gilbert as well as other clinic managers have achieved practice administrator status and had been certified as administrators in physician practice management by the American Academy of Medical Management.
Administration has been further enhanced by the addition of John Clontz, J.D. as in-house counsel administrator, as chief compliance officer and he functions in numerous other administrative duties. This has allowed an improved foundation for the delivery of cost-effective, compassionate, compliant, multispecialty neuroscience healthcare.
Patient centered conservative treatment and quality of care have resulted in over 2000 physicians and doctors from Kentucky and surrounding states requesting consultations from our physicians at the Spine and Brain Neurosurgical Center.
